Kolkata, April 26 (NationPress) Family members of a father and son who lost their lives in communal unrest in Murshidabad district accepted a compensation package from the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday, after initially refusing aid from the state government.
Adhikari visited their home in Samserganj, Murshidabad and presented two cheques, each amounting to Rs 10 lakhs, to the grieving family.
Earlier this month, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs to the family, which they had turned down.
The family members claimed that the violence occurred due to the failure of the state police to respond promptly to distress calls from the Hindu community affected by the unrest.
“The fact that the family accepted my compensation after rejecting that from the Chief Minister indicates their distrust in the state government and the Chief Minister,” remarked Adhikari.
He further stated that the family had previously refused assistance from the “anti-Hindu” state government, which they felt did not resonate with their beliefs.
“Today, it is clear that the Hindu community stands united. In times of adversity, we, as Hindus, vow to support one another with steadfast solidarity,” he asserted.
Adhikari also toured various affected areas in the district and visited a temple that was damaged during the riots.
While engaging with locals, villagers expressed their need for the establishment of permanent Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) camps in the affected regions.
He assured the community of his continued support in the future, saying, “I promise you that our day will also come.”
Earlier this month, Murshidabad district was the scene of communal violence related to the Waqf (Amendment) Act. The situation returned to normal after the deployment of CAPF following a directive from a special division bench of the Calcutta High Court.
