Aligarh, Aug 12 (NationPress) Aligarh, a city famous for its locks and educational institutions, is carving out a niche in a new craft—idol-making. With the festival of Krishna Janmashtami just around the corner, local artisans have been diligently creating idols of various Hindu deities. This year, as in the past, the significant contribution of Muslim artisans shines through, as they expertly craft brass idols of Laddu Gopal, embodying unity and communal harmony.
Idol trader Kapil Gupta provided insights into the flourishing business as the festival approaches.
“Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with immense joy across the nation. Laddu Gopal is the most venerated deity during this festival. We’ve received a multitude of orders from both domestic and international clients. Our idols are handcrafted and intricately decorated,” he shared with IANS.
Gupta noted that the idol-making industry in Aligarh boasts a legacy of over a century, with the demand for Laddu Gopal idols increasing each year.
He also emphasized the diverse community involvement in this craft.
“Muslim artisans and even Sikh craftsmen play an active role in this trade. As these idols are completely handmade, they require skilled hands and dedication. Our Muslim brothers contribute significantly to Hindu festivals by creating these exquisite idols. People from all communities collaborate in harmony,” Gupta remarked.
One such craftsman, Aqeel Khan, who specializes in welding brass idols, shared his experiences.
“With Janmashtami nearing, I am preparing Laddu Gopal idols. This is our means of livelihood. Hindus and Muslims coexist peacefully here, and we take pride in our work. I’ve practiced this craft for 25 years, and my family, including my children, upholds this tradition. We experience immense joy in making these idols for the festival,” he expressed.
