Bhopal, June 3 (NationPress) An unidentified creature launched an unexpected and brutal assault on eighteen villagers from Limbai, a tribal community in Madhya Pradesh's Barwani district, during the night of May 5. Although the victims were promptly provided with medical assistance and received rabies vaccinations, tragically, six individuals have lost their lives.
Despite the efforts of healthcare professionals, some victims succumbed to their injuries in Barwani, located 350 km away from the state capital, Bhopal, while others later passed away at Maharaja Yashwant Rao (MY) Hospital in Indore.
As their conditions deteriorated on Saturday, several individuals including 50-year-old Chain Singh, 40-year-old Sunil Nigwal, and 15-year-old Vijay from Limbai, along with 35-year-old Kalu and 48-year-old Ram Singh from San village, were urgently referred to MY Hospital.
Sadly, Chain Singh passed away in the Indore hospital on Sunday.
On the same day, Sunil Nigwal was transferred from MY Hospital back to Limbai by his family, only for his health to worsen. By Monday, he was taken to Barwani Hospital, where he also succumbed.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bhupendra Rawat informed IANS that the eighteen villagers had fallen prey to the attack of the unidentified predator while they were sleeping under the open sky to escape the unbearable summer heat.
The animal attacked all victims in one night, even targeting their faces. Although rabies vaccinations were administered swiftly and proper protocols were followed, six individuals lost their lives in a puzzling situation where none displayed classic symptoms of rabies, such as hydrophobia, leaving medical experts perplexed.
"It must be a jackal or fox," speculated the SDM.
The identity of the animal remains a mystery, putting the medical community in Indore in a challenging position.
Survivors reported that the victims hailed from various villages including Talwara, Menimata, Solyapura, Limbai, Ojhar, Kakariya, Davana, and Sangaon. Meanwhile, two more patients were taken from MY Hospital by their families.
By Monday, Muralidhar, 65, and Dagdu, 75, were also admitted to MY Hospital, suffering from injuries on their hands, legs, and faces. "Currently, two patients from Sendhwa, not Limbai, are under close observation at MY Hospital. They are stable and show no symptoms of hydrophobia or any other rabies-related signs," stated Dr. Jitendra Verma, Deputy Superintendent of the hospital.
"We cannot determine if the attacker was a dog, fox, or jackal," he added, mentioning that the National Communicable Disease Control authorities have been notified.
According to the victims, they were peacefully sleeping when the unknown predator struck, biting them before disappearing into the night. None were able to identify the creature, complicating efforts to determine its species based on the bite marks. Regardless of their uncertainty, all have been vaccinated.
On Monday, villagers expressed their outrage, resulting in a blockade on the state highway. Frustrated by forest officials’ refusal to track down the elusive beast, their anger spilled onto the streets. However, tensions eased when a post from an unverified X account belonging to the Barwani District Collector indicated that Collector Guncha Sanobar personally visited Limbai to extend her condolences to the injured and bereaved families, gather important information from the villagers, and assure them of governmental support in the wake of this distressing event.
The Collector has not been available for further comments.
