Nagpur, March 22 (NationPress) On Friday, authorities took into custody 14 individuals linked to the recent wave of violence in Nagpur, Maharashtra, raising the total number of arrests in this case to 105. Among those detained are 10 juveniles, highlighting the seriousness of the unrest affecting the city.

The police have filed three new First Information Reports (FIRs) regarding these incidents. The unrest began on March 17, fueled by rumors that a sheet with a "verse from the Quran" had been set ablaze during a demonstration organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).

This protest, demanding the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, led to extensive stone-pelting and arson throughout various areas of Nagpur.

Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravindra Kumar Singhal confirmed the arrests, stating, "Fourteen individuals have been arrested from different parts of the city in connection with the riots. Furthermore, three new FIRs have been registered." He mentioned that the decision to lift the curfew in certain areas will be made after a high-level review meeting.

Commissioner Singhal held a meeting at the Police Bhawan in Civil Lines to evaluate the situation. He announced that the curfew was partially lifted in Nandanvan and Kapil Nagar police station limits starting at 2 p.m. on Thursday (March 20, 2025) for public convenience and to maintain law and order. In Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, and Imambada, the curfew was relaxed for two hours from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. to enable residents to buy essential goods.

The violence resulted in 33 police personnel sustaining injuries, including three officers holding Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) rank.

Importantly, a case of treason has been filed against the primary suspect, Faheem Khan.

Earlier, a local court in Nagpur remanded 17 individuals arrested in relation to the violence to police custody until Saturday (March 22). The court, while issuing the remand, stressed the severity of the crimes and the strong evidence against the accused.
