Nagpur, March 18 (NationPress) Following violent confrontations between two factions, a curfew has been enforced in ten police station jurisdictions within Maharashtra's Nagpur, as confirmed by officials on Tuesday.

The affected areas include the police station precincts of Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Lakadganj, Pachpaoali, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imamwada, Yashodhara Nagar, and Kapil Nagar.

Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singhal, the Police Commissioner, issued a directive stating that the curfew, effective from midnight, will remain in effect until further notice.

Authorities have been granted the authority to block roads in the impacted areas to uphold law and order. Any individual breaching the curfew will be subjected to penalties under Section 223 of the Indian Penal Code.

“The situation is currently stable. Tensions escalated after a photo was burned, leading to a gathering. We attempted to disperse the crowd and have taken action in this context. Legal measures will be enforced against those responsible,” the police commissioner remarked.

The police have appealed to the community for cooperation in restoring peace and order.

According to police sources, a comprehensive operation has been initiated, resulting in the detention of 50 individuals allegedly involved in stone-throwing, vandalism, and assaults on police and fire brigade personnel. A substantial deployment of police, SRPF, and RAF forces has been established, with more than a dozen officers, including the deputy commissioner of police, sustaining injuries.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is actively overseeing the situation and has appealed to the public to assist the police in maintaining peace and order. He urged citizens of Nagpur to refrain from believing in rumors and to avoid taking the law into their own hands. “Nagpur is a city that values peace and shares in both joy and sorrow. In such times, please do not fall for rumors and support the administration,” he stated.

“The disturbances in Nagpur's Mahal area are completely unacceptable. It is wrong for crowds to gather and engage in stone-throwing. I implore all Nagpur residents to adhere to law and order. This city is meant for harmonious living, thus no one should disrupt peace. I am closely monitoring the situation,” he added. “I have instructed the Nagpur Police Commissioner to take stringent action against those involved in the violence,” he emphasized.

The Chief Minister has cautioned that “Any attacks on police will be regarded very seriously. I urge everyone to maintain peace.”

In the meantime, the opposition has criticized the state government over the violent incidents that occurred on Monday. Shiv Sena UBT legislator Aaditya Thackeray expressed on his X handle, “The law and order situation in the state has deteriorated beyond recognition. Nagpur, the home city of the Chief Minister and Home Minister, is facing this crisis.”
