Northeast Frontier Railway Achieves Major Milestones in Solar Energy Expansion
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 20 (NationPress) The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is making remarkable advances in its dedication to green energy and sustainability, achieving significant milestones in solar power installations across its various divisions and units, as reported by officials on Friday.
NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, announced that as of February 2026, the cumulative installed solar capacity throughout NFR has reached 31.890 MWp since the launch of the solarisation initiative in 2011.
In the current financial year 2025–26 alone, an impressive 22.734 MWp of new capacity has been added, highlighting NFR’s intensified focus on adopting renewable energy.
Among the divisions, Lumding (which includes Guwahati) has achieved the highest cumulative installation at 13.334 MWp, followed closely by the Rangiya division with 8.941 MWp.
Additional contributions have come from other divisions, including Alipurduar (West Bengal), Katihar (Bihar), and Tinsukia (Assam), all significantly boosting the overall capacity.
The solar installations have yielded substantial operational advantages. In the fiscal year 2025–26 (up to February 2026), the average monthly solar energy output was approximately 9.18 lakh units, translating to an average monthly financial saving of around Rs 68.80 lakh, Sharma elaborated.
He emphasized that solar energy generation underscores NFR’s commitment to minimizing its carbon footprint while optimizing energy costs.
To further enhance its green energy initiatives, NFR currently has an additional 19.14 MWp of solar capacity under various stages of implementation across its divisions.
Major upcoming solar installations are scheduled for the Lumding, Rangiya, Katihar, and Alipurduar divisions, which will significantly boost renewable energy capacity shortly.
These initiatives highlight NFR’s dedication to sustainable development and its proactive role in supporting the Indian Railways’ vision of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
The ongoing solarisation efforts not only aid in environmental preservation but also promise long-term economic benefits through reduced energy expenditures, Sharma concluded.
The Northeast Frontier Railway, based at Maligaon near Guwahati, operates throughout the Northeastern states, as well as in seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of North Bihar.
