NFR logs ₹2,744 crore earnings in 2026, leads all zones in solar power
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) recorded apportioned earnings of ₹2,744 crore during April–July 2026, an 8 per cent rise over the same period last year, as the zone pushed ahead on safety upgrades, new train services, freight expansion, and renewable energy. General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava outlined the zone's performance at a function held at NFR headquarters, Maligaon, Guwahati, on 16 August 2026.
Safety First: KAVACH, Detectors, and Level-Crossing Elimination
Shrivastava reaffirmed that NFR operates under the guiding principle of '100 per cent Safety, Zero Risk'. More than 130 electric locomotives have been equipped with the KAVACH automatic train-protection system, while 30 Hot Box Detectors and three Automatic Train Examination Systems have been installed across the zone. The railway has simultaneously worked to eliminate level-crossing gates and commission new foot-over bridges, reducing both passenger and operational risk.
New Train Services and Connectivity Milestones
Passenger connectivity received a significant boost with the introduction of 14 pairs of new train services, including the Vande Bharat Sleeper, Amrit Bharat, and several Mail/Express trains. An additional 674 trips of special services were operated to handle peak-traffic demand. Two milestones stood out: the launch of India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express from Kamakhya, and the inauguration of the first MEMU service between Agartala (Tripura) and Karimganj (Southern Assam), strengthening inter-state connectivity across the Northeast.
Freight Growth and Cross-Border Trade
Freight infrastructure was expanded with the commissioning of seven new freight terminals and two Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals at Habaipur and Baihata. In a landmark development, the first-ever container train from India to Nepal ran in July 2026, marking a new chapter in cross-border trade. The completion of the track linking Jogighopa Railway Station Yard with the Jogighopa Multi Modal Logistics Park further integrates rail with the region's logistics network. Ticket-checking earnings also surged by 37 per cent during the period. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) crossed the ₹18 crore earnings mark — its highest-ever figure for the corresponding period — reflecting sustained tourist interest in the heritage line.
Solar Energy and Station Redevelopment
NFR commissioned 23.7 MWp of solar power capacity between January and July 2026, the highest of any zone in Indian Railways for the period. On infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated four redeveloped Amrit Stations — Kamakhyaguri, Majbat, Jalpaiguri Road, and Haldibari — providing upgraded passenger amenities in line with the national station-modernisation drive.
Flood Restoration and Operational Resilience
The zone demonstrated operational resilience when more than 700 railway personnel worked around the clock to restore flood-damaged tracks at Simaluguri within 17 days. Restoration work is also continuing at New Harangajao, where adverse weather and difficult terrain have posed sustained challenges. Shrivastava credited the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Bharat Scouts and Guides, sportspersons, and railway staff for the zone's collective performance, and linked NFR's overall direction to the national goal of 'Viksit Bharat @ 2047'.
