NIA Court Approves Default Bail for 15 Accused in Beldanga Violence Incident
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 18 (NationPress) A special court under the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday granted default bail to 15 individuals out of 35 implicated in the violent incidents that took place in Beldanga, located in West Bengal's predominantly minority Murshidabad district earlier this year.
The court's decision came after the investigating agency could not present a charge sheet within 90 days following the arrests of these individuals. Nevertheless, the court stipulated certain conditions for the release on default bail.
It is important to note that the unrest in Beldanga was triggered by the death of a migrant worker from the area in neighboring Jharkhand. The situation escalated once the migrant's body returned to Beldanga.
Local demonstrators claimed that the migrant worker was a victim of lynching in Jharkhand, citing religious and linguistic motives. The initial protests involved blocking railways and roads in Beldanga.
In an attempt to clear the blockades, police faced ambushes from the protesters, resulting in injuries to some journalists covering the situation.
Subsequently, the Jharkhand Police released a statement based on the postmortem report, which classified the migrant worker’s death as a case of suicide.
Criticism was directed at cricketer-turned-politician and local Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member, Yusuf Pathan, for his absence during the turmoil.
Following this, opposition leader in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, submitted a petition to the Calcutta High Court, urging for the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in Beldanga and requesting that the NIA take over the investigation.
The Supreme Court later concurred with the Calcutta High Court, suggesting that if deemed necessary by the Union Home Minister, the NIA could initiate an investigation.
Ultimately, the NIA commenced its investigation into the incidents in Beldanga.
