Patna, April 10 (NationPress) On Friday, Nitish Kumar officially took his oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha, signifying a notable transition in his extensive political journey.

He arrived in New Delhi on Thursday, joined by fellow leaders Sanjay Jha and Vijay Kumar Choudhary, to finalize the formalities for his entry into the Upper House of Parliament.

This milestone positions Nitish Kumar among a distinguished group of leaders who have held seats in all four legislative bodies: the State Legislative Assembly, State Legislative Council, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha.

This is considered a unique accolade in his lengthy political career.

He was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on March 16 and stepped down from his position as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) on March 30.

This resignation signifies the conclusion of Nitish Kumar’s prolonged affiliation with the Bihar Legislative Council.

First becoming a member in 2006, he successfully served four successive terms — 2006-2012, 2012-2018, 2018-2024, and onwards from 2024 — before his resignation.

Since taking office as Chief Minister in November 2005, Nitish Kumar has maintained his role through membership in the Legislative Council rather than participating in Assembly elections.

Though he was previously elected as an MLA from Harnaut in 1985 and had served in the Lok Sabha, his tenure as Chief Minister has predominantly relied on his position in the Upper House of the State Legislature.

His resignation from the Legislative Council also mandates that he vacate his role as Chief Minister.

Upon his arrival in New Delhi, Nitish Kumar articulated his rationale for the transition, stating, “I have achieved significant milestones in Bihar. Now, I believe my efforts should be concentrated here, and that is my plan.”

He added, “I will resign from my responsibilities in Patna and will begin my work here in New Delhi. I intend to step down in the next three or four days, paving the way for new individuals to take on the roles of Chief Minister and other Ministers.”

Nitish Kumar’s move to the Rajya Sabha signifies the start of a new chapter in his political career that commenced in 1985.

His formal induction into the Upper House is anticipated to further influence Bihar’s political dynamics in the months ahead.
