Bhubaneswar, Jan 4 (NationPress) Odisha's Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed profound sadness following the tragic death of an auto-rickshaw driver in a collision with an 'Ama Bus', the state-owned public transport service, at Rupali Square in Bhubaneswar. CM Majhi has mandated the Transport Department to implement effective strategies, collaborating with the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT), to mitigate the frequency of accidents involving 'Ama Bus' services and enhance overall road safety.
In a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), he extended his heartfelt condolences to the deceased's family and announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. He also wished a swift recovery for the injured girl student.
Concerned about the persistent accidents involving 'Ama Bus' services, the Chief Minister instructed the Transport Department to work closely with the CRUT to proactively address these issues and elevate road safety standards.
Highlighting the necessity to improve the skills of 'Ama Bus' drivers, the Chief Minister ordered regular training programs. These should not only focus on driving skills but also address drivers' physical and mental well-being.
He further recommended integrating modules that foster a sense of sensitivity and responsibility among drivers. Additionally, he directed Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs) to regularly assess the fitness of 'Ama Bus' vehicles.
The Chief Minister also called for the formation of a dedicated squad by the Commerce and Transport Department to conduct systematic inspections of bus fitness. To avert similar unfortunate incidents, he urged the department to carry out ongoing reviews and implement lasting improvements in the overall situation.
Notably, a speeding 'Ama Bus' struck an auto-rickshaw waiting at a red light at Rupali Square on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the death of the driver, Bishnu Patra (60), and injuries to three passengers, including a girl student.
