Is the Subhadra Scheme the Largest Women-Centric Welfare Initiative in Odisha Since Independence?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, Jan 22 (NationPress) Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi referred to the state government's flagship Subhadra Scheme as the most significant women-focused welfare program in Odisha since Independence while announcing financial support exceeding ₹315 crore to over 4.57 lakh recipients under this initiative.
The funds were allocated to individuals who had not yet received the first, second (pending), and third payments, alongside newly registered beneficiaries for the fiscal year 2025–26. The assistance was credited directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
During a special event, the Chief Minister articulated, “With an annual budget of ₹11,000 crore, ‘Subhadra’ stands as the foremost women-centric program in Odisha since Independence.”
“Under this initiative, over one crore eligible women aged 21 to 60 will receive ₹10,000 each year in two payments (on Rakhi Purnima and International Women’s Day), totaling ₹50,000 over five years. This makes Subhadra a shining testament to the government's dedication to all mothers and sisters in Odisha,” he asserted.
He further mentioned that as soon as his government was formed, a Cabinet decision was taken on the very first day, and the initial payment was distributed on September 17, 2024.
Majhi also highlighted that to date, more than ₹15,000 crore has been allocated in three installments to over one crore beneficiaries.
Discussing women’s empowerment and economic self-sufficiency, CM Majhi stressed that financial independence enhances self-esteem.
“When women have money in their hands, their voices grow stronger within families and society. They can make decisions, plan their futures, and confront challenges with resilience. The Subhadra scheme aims to instill that very confidence,” he stated.
This initiative also promotes social justice by supporting economically disadvantaged groups, rural populations, tribal communities, urban impoverished families, and all women and families needing assistance.
He emphasized the objective is to ensure that no one is overlooked in the development journey.
CM Majhi added that the government’s efforts extend beyond just the Subhadra scheme. In the current budget, a historic ₹89,862 crore has been earmarked specifically for mothers, representing nearly 30% of the entire budget. The three installments under the Subhadra scheme have reinforced the financial foundation for women in the state and accelerated women’s progress.
