New Delhi, May 17 (NationPress) In a significant leap towards revitalizing the Indian Railways, over 100 revamped railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme are set to be inaugurated on May 22.

This initiative, which began two years ago, aims to convert over 1,300 railway stations nationwide into world-class travel hubs featuring modern amenities and reflecting local culture and heritage.

In an interview with IANS, Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity at the Railway Board, underscored the magnitude and significance of this project.

"The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme was launched to enhance the infrastructure of Indian Railways. We have pinpointed more than 1,300 stations for redevelopment under this initiative. The upgrades are designed to honor regional heritage, cater to local residents, and provide world-class passenger facilities," he stated.

Kumar noted that the designs of the station buildings aim to embody the architectural essence of their respective regions.

“From the facades to the landscaping, all elements are being developed in harmony with the area's cultural identity. At several stations, connectivity has been improved with access from both sides, while entry and exit points have been transformed into exemplary gateways,” he added.

Among the standout features of these revamped stations are foot overbridges, escalators, upgraded signage systems, high-speed Wi-Fi, enhanced lighting, and advanced passenger information systems. Additionally, modern amenities such as roof plazas, kiosks, food courts, children's play areas, and beautifully landscaped surroundings are being included.

Stations like Saharanpur, Bijnor, Govardhan, Bareilly City, Siddharthnagar, Sehore Junction, Samakhyali, and Palitana are among those now poised for public use. Furthermore, stations in Rajasthan, five in Karnataka, nine in Tamil Nadu, three in West Bengal, and key stations in Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh (Sullurpeta), Assam (Haibar Village), and Himachal Pradesh have also been revitalized under this scheme.

Kumar confirmed that the dedication ceremony for these stations is planned for May 22, with preparations already in full swing.

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme embodies a forward-thinking vision to upgrade railway stations by emphasizing sustainability, heritage integration, and enhanced passenger experiences. This initiative seeks not only to boost infrastructure but also to redefine the way India travels—more comfortably, efficiently, and with pride in its regional identity.

The scheme's roots can be traced back to 2021, when Gandhinagar became the first station to undergo a complete transformation, followed by Rani Kamalapati Station (formerly Habibganj) in the same year. In 2022, the Union Cabinet approved the redevelopment of three iconic stations — New Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Point of View

I view the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme as a transformative effort to modernize railway infrastructure while respecting regional heritage. This initiative not only aims to improve travel experiences but also fosters national pride by integrating local culture into station designs.
