New Delhi, Feb 25 (NationPress) Delhi Cabinet Minister Parvesh Verma has officially taken over as the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister on Tuesday, following in the footsteps of his prominent father, Sahib Singh Verma, who served on the Council of Ministers and eventually became Chief Minister.
Upon assuming his role, the 48-year-old Jat leader, seen as a close aide to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, pledged to clean the Yamuna, fulfilling a commitment made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and to establish the river as a representation of Delhi’s identity.
In addition, he oversees the portfolios of Legislative Affairs, Irrigation and Flood Control, Water, and Gurdwara Elections.
Verma shared on social media, stating, “Today, I took an oath to serve the people of Delhi as I assumed charge as Cabinet Minister. We are privileged to have the guidance and leadership of the world's most popular leader, Prime Minister Mr. @narendramodiji.”
“Under the double engine BJP government, we aim to position Delhi as a continuously leading state and a developed capital. I assure every resident that our government will work tirelessly for service, good governance, equality, and the welfare of the underprivileged,” he emphasized.
Earlier, in the Delhi Assembly, Verma remarked, “The citizens of Delhi voted for the BJP to develop the capital and to remove those who allowed corruption to fester for 11 years, depriving Delhi residents of basic amenities.”
Critically addressing the inappropriate conduct of the Arvind Kejriwal government, Verma stated that the AAP has consistently utilized the House for its own interests, neglecting public welfare.
“The integrity of the House has been compromised; even during the Lieutenant Governor’s address, AAP members disrespected the House and the Constitution. The Speaker must take decisive measures against the Opposition leaders. These individuals do not wish for the citizens of Delhi to receive amenities or for the Yamuna to be revitalized. Nevertheless, we will work diligently to fulfill every commitment made to the people of Delhi,” he assured.
Earlier in the day, the PWD minister praised the life sentence given to Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in the 1984 anti-riots case, recalling how his father, Sahib Singh Verma, protected 22 Sikhs from Congress rioters.
Verma, a two-term MP, holds the record for the highest victory margin in a Lok Sabha seat in Delhi. In 2019, he won against his Congress opponent in West Delhi by a whopping 2.87 lakh votes.
This Jat leader made headlines in the recent Assembly elections by defeating AAP heavyweight and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in his own constituency of New Delhi.
