Bhubaneswar, July 16 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has condemned the excessive police actions taken against Biju Janata Dal (BJD) workers and leaders during their peaceful demonstration at Lower PMG in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, which aimed to demand justice for the FM College girl student who tragically succumbed on Monday following a self-immolation attempt due to sexual harassment by a faculty member.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Patnaik claimed that the fundamental right to protest in a democratic manner is facing severe threats under the current state government. “The right to democratic protest is under grave threat in #Odisha. Today, the @bjd_odisha exercised its constitutional right to hold a peaceful demonstration, protesting the tragic death of a 20-year-old girl student--a victim of systemic apathy and sheer betrayal,” stated Patnaik.
The BJD leader also expressed alarm at the use of water cannons and rubber bullets against the BJD workers and leaders while they were conducting themselves in an orderly manner as they marched towards Lok Seva Bhawan to stage a gherao. “I strongly condemn the heavy-handed tactics employed by the police and the Government to sabotage the BJD’s peaceful march. The police acted in a blatantly partisan manner, rushing to fire rubber bullets when there was absolutely no justification for such excessive force,” he remarked.
Highlighting the concerning behavior of law enforcement in light of Wednesday's events, the former Chief Minister referred to a recently circulated video where a senior IPS officer was allegedly seen instructing security personnel to “break the legs” of protesters.
“Not long ago, a senior IPS officer was recorded near the Chief Minister’s residence directing his force to inflict harm and promising rewards for those who accomplished this. Today, two former ministers have sustained serious injuries, likely needing surgery. Other senior BJD leaders, including a female Rajya Sabha member, and several party workers have faced brutal police violence,” Patnaik stated.
He called for accountability from the state government regarding the alleged orders given to police officials to employ excessive force against demonstrators. The BJD supremo affirmed the party’s commitment to fighting for justice for the deceased FM College girl student.
“Clearly, the Government owes an explanation for this kind of direction. The BJD will continue its relentless fight undeterred until justice is served for the FM College girl student who lost her life tragically. Neither water cannons nor rubber bullets can weaken our resolve. Let it be clear: no force can stifle our commitment to stand up for justice and uphold the democratic rights of the people of Odisha,” Patnaik concluded.
In contrast, the Commissioner of Police, S Dev Datt Singh, rejected the allegations made by the BJD, asserting that the police utilized mild force in a very controlled manner. He also clarified that no rubber bullets were discharged at the protesters during the demonstration on Wednesday, adding that drones were employed to oversee the protest.
