Muzaffarpur, April 22 (NationPress) The Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana is proving to be a vital support system for traditional artisans in Bihar's Muzaffarpur, providing fresh hope and financial empowerment to those engaged in crafts that have been passed down through generations.
Kumar Shashi Bhushan Pandit, a sculptor from Muzaffarpur, shared his excitement about the initiative, referring to it as a 'blessing' for artisans like himself.
"For the first time, a Prime Minister has focused on individuals like us - sculptors, tailors, washermen, and stone carvers. This initiative will improve the lives of countless skilled workers," Pandit informed IANS.
Through the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, artisans are registered and offered 15 days of specialized training, along with financial support during the training period. Upon completion, beneficiaries receive modern toolkits at no charge and can access loans at a concessional interest rate of just 2 percent. The scheme also facilitates market access through exhibitions and fairs, such as the annual 'Saras Mela' held in Patna.
“I have been crafting idols and selling them in local markets for many years. But now, with this initiative, we have an opportunity to expand. Many of us are facing challenges—some from poverty, others due to limited workspace or financial backing. This scheme addresses all those issues," Pandit stated.
He also urged fellow artisans to make the most of the initiative.
"Whether you are a goldsmith, cobbler, tailor, or leather worker - participate in the PM Vishwakarma Yojana. Acquire new skills, enhance your craft, and grow your business. The government is offering training centers and even machinery for free."
"The true effect of this initiative will be observed when these products reach global markets," Pandit remarked.
"PM (Narendra) Modi has opened doors for artisans to display their work at national fairs. If such platforms are established in Muzaffarpur, it will lead to increased local employment and economic growth," he concluded.
The PM Vishwakarma Yojana was inaugurated by PM Modi on Vishwakarma Jayanti, on December 17, 2023.
Under this initiative, individuals are trained in traditional crafts and provided with monetary assistance. Skill development training is available for those working in informal or unorganized sectors, including carpenters, blacksmiths, masons, goldsmiths, potters, tailors, barbers, cobblers, sculptors, toy makers, etc.
