Why Did PMK Founder Ramadoss Expel 3 MLAs for Anti-Party Activities?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, January 12 (NationPress) The faction of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) under the leadership of its founder S. Ramadoss has declared the expulsion of three current legislators, citing their ongoing engagement in activities harmful to the party despite several warnings.
In a comprehensive announcement, PMK General Secretary Murali Shankar revealed that the party's disciplinary committee had requested explanations from the MLAs concerning their alleged anti-party actions. Notices were dispatched on July 20, 2025, urging them to respond either in writing or by appearing before the party's leadership. However, the statement indicated that no feedback was received from the legislators—neither in person, via phone, nor through any written communication—addressed to either the party founder or the party president.
Even after the notices, the MLAs allegedly persisted in actions deemed “against the interests and discipline of the party,” according to the statement.
Given this ongoing defiance, the party leadership resolved to proceed with their expulsion.
The expelled legislators include S. Sivakumar (Mayilam), S. Sadasivam (Mettur), and S.P. Venkateswaran (Dharmapuri).
Previously, all three had been placed under temporary suspension while awaiting disciplinary measures.
The expulsion, effective January 12, affects their primary membership and all organizational roles within the PMK.
Moreover, the statement emphasized that party leadership has directed its members and office-bearers to refrain from any form of party-related communication with the expelled legislators, including participation in political events, organizational functions, or any coordination under the PMK banner.
This incident highlights the escalating internal conflict within the Vanniyar-dominated party, which has experienced factionalism in recent years.
In a related development, the opposing faction led by Anbumani Ramadoss previously expelled G.K. Mani, the Pennagaram MLA, and R. Arul, the Salem (West) MLA.
As the Assembly elections approach, these expulsions are likely to have significant political ramifications in northern Tamil Nadu, where the PMK has traditionally held substantial influence.
