Amaravati, May 27 (NationPress) The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) is calling for accountability against police officers who publicly assaulted three young individuals in Tenali town, describing the incident as a serious breach of constitutional rights and human dignity.
Former minister Merugu Nagarjuna, MLC M. Arun Kumar, and former MLA Annabathuni Shivakumar voiced their anger over the use of excessive force by police, labeling the occurrence as a disgraceful representation of the coalition government's inability to safeguard vulnerable groups, particularly Dalits and minorities.
In Tenali town, located in Guntur district, police captured three young men on Sunday, who were accused of attacking a police constable. A video circulating on social media on Monday depicted police officers beating the suspects publicly with sticks. The young men were made to sit on the ground while the officers struck their feet.
The individuals involved were identified as Chebrolu John Victor (25), Shaik Babulal (21), and Doma Rakesh (25). According to law enforcement, they were close associates of a known criminal and had assaulted a police constable the previous month.
After their arrest on Sunday, they were presented before a court, which ordered their detention in judicial custody.
The YSRCP leaders are demanding an urgent investigation into the situation and severe repercussions for the officers involved, stressing that such lawlessness is unacceptable in a democratic nation.
Nagarjuna accused the coalition government of promoting chaos, stating, “Andhra Pradesh is experiencing anarchy, with Dalits suffering from unprecedented violence, from the desecration of Ambedkar’s statue to public shaming.”
According to NCRB statistics, Andhra Pradesh ranks highest in crimes against Dalits, commented Arun Kumar. “The brutal treatment of these youths is an assault on the dignity of every Dalit and minority. The Chief Minister must ensure that such incidents cease,” he stated.
Shivakumar condemned the police's actions, arguing that publicly beating youths and broadcasting footage of it is a mockery of justice.
In response, the Human Rights Forum (HRF) has denounced the event as a serious violation of constitutional rights and the rule of law.
G. Siva Nageswara Rao, vice-president of HRF Andhra Pradesh, along with others, has called for an immediate investigation into the incident and strict action against the involved police officers under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS) and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
