Jammu, May 25 (NationPress) An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of police tragically lost his life, and another officer sustained injuries on Sunday after a speeding vehicle collided with them in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to officials, ASI Yog Raj Singh was conducting a checkpoint on the border road at Pulpur in the Supwal area of Samba district. This operation followed intelligence reports suggesting possible attempts by smugglers to transport bovine animals.
“The police team attempted to halt a speeding load carrier around 4:15 AM, but the driver evaded the barricade and struck them, leading to injuries for ASI Singh and another officer. Both were quickly transported to a nearby hospital; however, the ASI succumbed to his injuries,” an official confirmed.
The official further noted that police have initiated a case and recovered the abandoned vehicle in a nearby location. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the driver responsible for this incident.
Bovine smuggling remains a significant issue for local law enforcement, as these animals are often transported in violation of governmental regulations requiring permission from the district magistrate.
In light of the recent tensions between India and Pakistan along the International Border (IB), particularly in the Kathua, Samba, and partially in Jammu districts, security forces are on high alert to prevent infiltration attempts during intense mortar shelling from Pakistan Rangers.
Though the IB in Jammu and Kashmir is extensively fenced with a multi-layered high-security barrier, there have been reports of terrorists breaching this fortified defense under the guise of Pakistani fire.
Additionally, security forces have uncovered a tunnel along the IB that has been utilized by terrorists for infiltration into Indian territory.
