Context

Bhagwan Birsa Munda was born on 15 November 1875 in the Chotanagpur plateau region, in present-day Jharkhand. He led the ulgulan (great tumult) — an armed uprising of the Munda tribal community against British land-dispossession policies and missionary encroachment in the late 19th century. He was arrested by colonial authorities and died in Ranchi jail on 9 June 1900, aged just 25, and has since been venerated as Dharti Aaba (Father of the Earth) by tribal communities across eastern and central India.
