Project Ganga, the Yogi Adityanath government's flagship rural broadband initiative, is set to go live in Uttar Pradesh shortly, with officials confirming that all preparatory modalities are in place and final-stage rollout is underway. The scheme aims to deliver high-speed internet connectivity to more than 20 lakh rural households across the state over the next two to three years.

What Project Ganga Covers

The initiative will establish a wide-scale network encompassing broadband connectivity, free public Wi-Fi, IPTV, OTT platform access, CCTV-based security solutions, and institutional digital connectivity in rural regions. Digital service providers will form a dedicated network to ensure last-mile access to advanced digital services in villages.

Beyond basic internet, the project will extend facilities such as freelancing support, remote work opportunities, online vocational training, and digital libraries — services that have largely been the preserve of urban centres.

Timeline and Institutional Groundwork

Project Ganga was initiated in July 2025. Earlier this year, a formal Memorandum of Understanding was signed in the presence of UP Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna. Last month, strategic discussions on financial enablement with banking partners commenced, completing the project's preparatory framework.

Between 8,000 and 10,000 digital entrepreneurs and service providers are expected to assist in implementation, with government officials actively supervising and monitoring rollout progress.

Why This Matters for Rural UP

Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, has long faced a stark urban-rural digital divide. Project Ganga is positioned as a structural intervention — not merely providing connectivity, but preparing villages for emerging digital technologies. Officials believe the initiative could meaningfully boost the rural digital economy and generate new employment avenues for youth in smaller towns and villages.

With financial partnerships and institutional agreements now in place, the project's live launch is expected imminently. The rollout will be phased over two to three years, with digital service provider networks being established progressively across rural districts.
