Hundreds of Indian National Congress (INC) workers and labourers from Punjab staged a demonstration outside the Vidhan Sabha in Chandigarh on 1 May — International Labour Day — demanding a minimum daily wage of ₹750 and a range of other labour welfare measures. The protest coincided with a special Assembly session convened by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to mark the occasion.
Who Led the Protest
State Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring led the demonstration, which drew hundreds of party workers and labourers to the steps of the state legislature. Warring framed the protest as a direct counter to what he called the AAP government's performative politics on labour rights.
What Congress Is Demanding
At the heart of the protest was a demand for a minimum daily wage of ₹750 for unskilled labourers. Warring also called for a structured monthly wage framework: between ₹15,000 and ₹17,000 for general labourers, between ₹19,000 and ₹20,000 for semi-skilled workers, and between ₹20,000 and ₹22,000 for skilled labourers. He said all other long-pending demands of the working class would be considered sympathetically if Congress returned to power in the state.
