Chandigarh, Sep 16 (NationPress) In a significant operation against the theft of crucial 5G telecom infrastructure aimed at Bharti Airtel Ltd, the Punjab Police apprehended 61 individuals and filed 95 FIRs statewide on Tuesday, effectively averting major disruptions to vital telecom services.
In response to reports concerning the thefts of high-value 5G infrastructure, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed under the directive of Punjab's Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav.
The SIT, spearheaded by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Rajpal Sandhu, collaborated with district police units to capture the suspects and recover significant amounts of stolen equipment.
Providing insights, DIG Sandhu noted that the accused specifically targeted expensive essential GUC1 Cards (baseband units), which are indispensable for the transmission of both 4G and 5G signals.
"The entire theft operation was executed in under two minutes, after which the culprits fled the scene," he remarked.
Utilizing a blend of technical surveillance and human intelligence, the Punjab Police successfully dismantled the networks engaged in these thefts.
"Ongoing investigations aim to trace both forward and backward links to uncover the entire network," the DIG stated, adding that the SIT is also probing any potential insider involvement.
The Punjab Police have issued a warning to all anti-social elements to halt such activities immediately or face severe legal consequences.
With district police forces establishing dedicated teams, further arrests are anticipated as the investigation evolves.
