Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) The Punjab government has communicated to the Delhi Assembly that a formal response from its Home Affairs department will be dispatched shortly regarding the proceedings connected to Leader of Opposition Atishi’s comments about Sikh Gurus, according to an official statement released on Friday.
“At present, a thorough and formal reply from the Additional Chief Secretary is being finalized to establish a clear stance on the issue. This response, which includes findings from Punjab’s leading law enforcement and forensic experts, has been submitted for review by the appropriate authority,” stated a message from the Punjab government’s Home Affairs department addressed to the Delhi Assembly secretariat.
Atishi’s comments sparked significant political backlash, with the ruling BJP in Delhi labeling them as “disrespectful towards Sikh Gurus,” prompting the Punjab Police to file an FIR related to a video clip of her statements in the Assembly.
The latest correspondence from the Punjab government to the Delhi Assembly includes formal clarification from the Office of the Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Home Affairs, Government of Punjab, regarding the ongoing investigation into Atishi's alleged remarks.
This follows a request from the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat on February 5, seeking written comments from the Punjab government concerning a breach of privilege and contempt issue.
The Punjab Additional Chief Secretary’s office confirmed that prior to the February 5 communication, the Department of Home Affairs had not received any direct inquiries from the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat regarding this particular matter.
It was indicated that formal comments from the Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, the Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar, and the Director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) Punjab, addressing the specific concerns raised by the Delhi Assembly’s Secretariat, had already been submitted to the legislature.
On February 4, Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta directed that the Punjab Police’s actions concerning the Atishi video issue be referred to the House Committee of Privileges for an in-depth investigation, asserting that a prima facie case of breach of privilege and contempt of the House had been established.
Taking note of a complaint lodged by Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra, Gupta indicated that the role of the Punjab Director General of Police and the Jalandhar Police Commissioner would be scrutinized by the Privileges Committee.
The matter pertains to an FIR registered by the Punjab Police based on a complaint from Iqbal Singh regarding an allegedly edited or manipulated video clip of statements made by Leader of Opposition Atishi during the Delhi Assembly proceedings on January 6, 2026.
After reviewing the reply provided by the Punjab Police and Mishra’s complaint, the Speaker determined that the issue directly impacts the workings of the House, which falls under legislative privilege.
