QR Codes to Monitor Groundwater Levels in Gurugram's Villages

Gurugram, Dec 17 (NationPress) To enhance public awareness regarding the diminishing groundwater levels in Gurugram, QR codes are being set up in villages as part of the Atal Bhujal Yojana.

Upon scanning the QR code, users will access details about the groundwater level in the specific village, including village population, Sarpanch, and additional pertinent information.

These QR codes are being placed at government schools, Panchayat Bhawan, and Anganwadi centers across 153 villages in the district. The Atal Bhujal program operates under the supervision of the Irrigation Department of Haryana.

This initiative was launched by the central government on December 25, 2019, aiming to collect rainwater, enhance groundwater levels, and minimize water wastage.

Various measures are being implemented in selected villages, including groundwater monitoring, pond restoration, and canal connections, among other initiatives. This is intended to reduce groundwater exploitation and improve water levels while also raising public awareness about water conservation.

Current data indicates that the groundwater levels stand at 74.54 feet in the Farrukhnagar block, 110.82 feet in Pataudi, and 66.84 feet in Sohna.

It is noteworthy that the Central Ground Water Board classified Gurugram as a dark zone in 2013. A groundwater report shows that the average groundwater level in the city was 6.64 meters in 1974, which declined to 19.85 meters in 2006 and 26.3 meters in 2014. By 2021, it plummeted to 36.99 meters.

The information provided by QR codes includes the district name, block name, village population, Gram Panchayat area, cultivable land, irrigable land, Sarpanch name, Bhujal Saheli name, water availability, and other details.

"Under the Atal Bhujal Yojana, there is a strong focus on water conservation in villages. Initiatives such as groundwater management, tube wells, rainwater harvesting, and pond maintenance are underway. QR codes are being installed to relay groundwater data in numerous villages, allowing residents to access comprehensive information on their mobile devices," stated Manish Chitkara, Executive Engineer at the Irrigation Department of Haryana.
