Ram Mandir donation theft: Tinnu Yadav held 39 hours, keys row deepens
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The investigation into the Ram Mandir donation box theft in Ayodhya entered a critical stage on 19 July as police conducted intensive interrogation of prime accused Ramshankar Yadav alias 'Tinnu' and his nephew Manish Yadav under a 39-hour custody remand granted by a local court. The questioning, led by Investigating Officer Ashutosh Tiwari, is aimed at reconstructing the alleged conspiracy, tracing the financial trail, and establishing each accused's role in the theft.
Night Visits to Temple and Residence
Both accused were taken into police custody at around 8 a.m. on Saturday. In a significant investigative step, officers escorted Ramshankar Yadav and Manish Yadav to their residence at approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday. Separately, Ramshankar was also taken to the Ram Janmabhoomi complex around the same time to help investigators verify evidence and reconstruct the sequence of events. The interrogation of both accused is continuing at the Police Lines.
Alleged Unauthorised Access and Key Control
According to information that has emerged during questioning, Ramshankar Yadav alias 'Tinnu' allegedly held all keys to the Ram Mandir's donation boxes without any official authorisation. Investigators have reportedly established that a senior member of the Trust allegedly handed over the donation box keys to Tinnu outside official channels — a development that points to possible systemic lapses in the temple's security and access protocols.
Ramshankar is further alleged to have enjoyed unrestricted access to the temple premises, reportedly entering through any gate without prior permission and moving freely in and out of the donation counting area. Such access, investigators believe, would have made it possible to siphon offerings over a sustained period without detection.
Nephew's Appointment and Recovered Cash
The probe has also revealed that Ramshankar Yadav allegedly facilitated the appointment of his nephew, Manish Yadav, to the temple's donation counting team — a placement that, according to investigators, was central to the alleged theft operation. Police have already recovered ₹2 lakh in cash, allegedly stolen from the Ram Mandir donation boxes, from Manish Yadav during the course of the investigation.
Construction Firm, PWD Job Among Fresh Leads
Investigators have uncovered additional alleged irregularities linked to Ramshankar Yadav. He reportedly established a construction company registered in his wife's name, and police are examining allegations that his son secured a position in the Public Works Department (PWD) by leveraging influence associated with the Ram Mandir. These leads, officials said, are being pursued to map the broader network of alleged benefit derived from his temple access.
What Comes Next
Six other accused in the case have already undergone custodial interrogation. The police custody of Ramshankar Yadav and Manish Yadav is scheduled to end at 11 p.m. on Sunday, after which both will be produced before the court as per the remand order. Officials said they expect further significant disclosures before the custody period concludes, particularly regarding the alleged role of the Trust insider and the full extent of the financial trail.
