Did Punjab Congress MP Randhawa Serve Notice to Suspended Leader Navjot for Defamatory Remarks?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, Dec 9 (NationPress) Congress MP Sukhjinder Randhawa has officially issued a legal notice to Navjot Kaur Sidhu, a suspended leader within the party, demanding that she apologize for her defamatory statements about him or face legal repercussions.
Navjot Kaur, who is the spouse of former Punjab Congress president and ex-Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, was recently expelled from the primary membership of the party following her controversial remark about “Rs 500 crore for the Chief Minister's chair.”
“We do not have Rs 500 crore to gain a seat in the Chief Minister's office,” she asserted to reporters, suggesting that the individual who offers a suitcase filled with Rs 500 crore is the one who becomes the Chief Minister.
In the notice served to her, Randhawa's lawyer stated, “On December 7 and 8, you made numerous false, baseless, and defamatory comments about my client during media interactions, which were extensively disseminated through various media channels.”
“In particular, you accused my client of engaging in corruption during his tenure as the in-charge for Rajasthan in the Indian National Congress, including the unethical distribution of party tickets in exchange for money.”
“These accusations lack any substantiation and are clearly intended to damage my client's reputation,” the counsel added.
The lawyer characterized her remarks as “entirely false, concocted, and driven by malice, political competition, or personal vendetta,” asserting that Randhawa has not participated in any corrupt activities, including the allocation of party tickets or accepting bribes.
Last week, Kaur stirred controversy by claiming, “The one who provides a suitcase containing Rs 500 crore becomes the Chief Minister.”
After her suspension, Kaur labeled Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as “insensitive, irresponsible, morally corrupt, and dishonest.”
She expressed on X, “I will not stand with an insensitive and irresponsible, morally dishonest and corrupt president. I advocate for my brothers and sisters affected by his incompetence and irresponsible behavior. I refuse to acknowledge him as President. I question why the Chief Minister is protecting him.”
Her assertions, made while claiming that her husband Navjot Singh Sidhu would re-enter politics only if Congress named him as their Chief Ministerial candidate, have sparked significant political backlash.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Saturday, Kaur reiterated that they “speak only for Punjab,” but do not possess the funds she claims influence high political positions.
“We do not have Rs 500 crore to gain a position in the Chief Minister's office,” she remarked, emphasizing that no one had requested money from them, but “the one who offers a suitcase filled with Rs 500 crore becomes the CM.”
