Residents of Gujarat Reap Huge Savings through PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

Ahmedabad, Dec 6 (NationPress) In the Sola locality of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, residents are enjoying substantial savings by adopting solar panels due to the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana initiated by the Central government.
This program, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is changing lives by allowing families to produce their own electricity with solar panels, significantly lowering their reliance on the grid and drastically reducing their electricity bills.
A notable example is Pradeep Rawal, a resident of the Sola area in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, who has been reaping financial rewards from his shift to solar energy.
Three years ago, he installed a 6-kilowatt solar panel system at his residence. Since that time, his electricity bills have vanished entirely. In fact, Rawal receives credits from the electricity department for the energy he generates.
Rawal, who used to spend around Rs 60,000 yearly on electricity, now benefits from the savings and even gets credited for the excess energy produced by his system.
"I previously paid approximately Rs 15,000 to Rs 17,000 annually, but since installing the solar panels, I receive credits. In March, the electricity department transfers about Rs 60,000 into my bank account due to the energy generated by my rooftop panels," Rawal noted.
The 25-year warranty on his solar panel system guarantees he can continue to enjoy these benefits without any complications.
"I made a one-time investment of Rs 7,000 for the installation. There have been no issues since then. Almost everyone in our community has installed solar panels. It’s an excellent scheme," he added.
Rawal also commended PM Modi's initiative to advance solar energy, labeling it a visionary plan for the nation.
"The progress of PM Modi's initiative to provide electricity through solar panels is quite remarkable. It’s genuinely advantageous for everyone," he stated.
This program is part of the government's larger strategy to boost solar energy utilization under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which was approved on February 29, 2024.
The initiative seeks to enhance rooftop solar capacity and enable residential households to generate their own electricity. With a total budget of Rs 75,021 crore, the program will be active until FY 2026-27.
Significant subsidies are provided to make solar energy more affordable. Households can avail a 60 percent subsidy on solar units up to 2kW capacity and 40 percent for systems ranging from 2 to 3kW, with the maximum subsidy capped at 3kW. Based on current benchmark prices, the subsidy could reach Rs 30,000 for a 1kW system, Rs 60,000 for a 2kW system, and Rs 78,000 for a 3kW system or higher.
The initiative is anticipated to assist over one crore households across India, saving the government an estimated Rs 75,000 crore annually in electricity expenditures.
