Retired Military Dogs: The Unsung Heroes Embarking on a New Journey

Jammu, Dec 22 (NationPress) Retired military working dogs, who have selflessly dedicated their lives to the nation, are now embarking on a new journey – sharing love, joy, and companionship. These remarkable dogs, recognized for their specialized training, calm demeanor, and steadfast commitment, are being welcomed into schools for special children and caring citizens throughout the country, continuing their noble service in a new and impactful way, as stated by the army on Sunday.

In celebration of the 246th Remount Veterinary Corps Day, the Indian Army presented twelve retired military dogs to Asha Schools and generous individuals.

"This considerate initiative highlights the Indian Army’s dedication to not only protecting the nation but also honoring its courageous soldiers – both human and animal – who have devoted their lives to service," the statement affirmed.

These K-9 champions have operated across diverse environments and situations, exhibiting bravery and resilience comparable to true soldiers. Their roles in detecting explosives, conducting avalanche rescues, search and rescue operations, tracking, and guarding have been crucial to both national security and humanitarian missions.

Significantly, indigenous breeds like the Rampur Hound, Mudhol Hound, Combai, Chippiparai, and Rajapalyam are increasingly being employed by the Indian Army for these essential functions, alongside well-known working dog breeds.

"The presence of these dogs offers substantial therapeutic advantages, especially for children with special needs, promoting their social, emotional, and cognitive development. By adopting these canine heroes, families and individuals can provide a nurturing home to a true patriot who has selflessly served the nation while gaining a devoted and empathetic companion," the statement elaborated.

During the event, the Director General Remount Veterinary Services (DGRVS) emphasized the vital role of the Remount Veterinary Corps in breeding, nurturing, training, and deploying dogs for various operational roles.

Following their honorable service, these canine warriors are taken to the Canine Geriatric Centre at the Remount Veterinary Corps Centre and College in Meerut Cantt, where they receive exceptional care and enjoy a comfortable life in their retirement.

The Indian Army also operates Geriatric Centres for its retired equine and canine soldiers, treating them with the same dignity and care as former human soldiers. These centres ensure that they receive comfort, assistance, and dedicated veterinary care, reflecting the Army's steadfast commitment to its silent heroes.

"By embracing these extraordinary animals, the Indian Army sets a commendable example of respect, compassion, and care for those who have served the nation. This initiative serves as a reminder of the remarkable bond between humans and animals, providing these brave dogs a well-deserved and fulfilling retirement," the statement concluded.
