New Delhi, Aug 2 (NationPress) A renewed debate over India’s controversial farm laws, which have since been repealed, erupted on Saturday as Rohan Jaitley, the son of the late Arun Jaitley, criticized Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for asserting that the BJP leader had 'threatened' him concerning the farm protests.
In a response on the social media platform X, Rohan Jaitley dismissed Gandhi’s allegations, highlighting a significant chronological error.
“Rahul Gandhi claims my late father, Arun Jaitley, threatened him regarding the farm laws. Let me remind him, my father passed away in 2019. The farm laws were introduced in 2020,” Rohan stated on X.
He further explained, “Most importantly, it was not in my father’s character to intimidate anyone over differing opinions. He was a dedicated democrat who always believed in fostering consensus. If such a situation arose, which is common in politics, he would promote open discussions to find a mutually agreeable solution. That was his essence — and it continues to be his legacy.”
Rohan Jaitley also advised the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, to be cautious when speaking about those who are no longer with us.
“I would appreciate Rahul Gandhi being considerate while discussing individuals who are deceased. He previously attempted to politicize the final days of Manohar Parrikar, which was equally inappropriate. Let the departed rest in peace,” he concluded.
Amit Malviya, who heads the BJP's National Information and Technology Department, also commented on the issue via social media, emphasizing the chronological impossibility of Rahul Gandhi’s assertions.
“Rahul Gandhi claims that Shri Arun Jaitley approached him to soften his opposition to the 2020 Farm Laws. Let's clarify: Arun Jaitley ji passed away on August 24, 2019. The draft Farm Bills were presented to the Union Cabinet on June 3, 2020, and the laws were enacted in September 2020,” Malviya stated.
He added, “Any discussions, whether in favor or opposition, began only after these events. To imply that Arun Jaitley ji contacted him for anything is factually incorrect and misleading. Let's adhere to the facts and avoid manipulating timelines to fit narratives.”
The controversy arose during Gandhi's speech at the Congress Party’s Annual Legal Conclave in New Delhi, where he alleged that Arun Jaitley had approached him to threaten him during the Congress’s opposition to the farm laws.
“I remember during my fight against the farm laws, Arun Jaitley was sent to me to intimidate me,” claimed Gandhi.
“He warned me, ‘If you continue opposing the government and fighting the farm laws, we will have to take action against you.’ I responded, ‘I don’t think you realize who you are dealing with.’”
However, Gandhi's assertion neglects a fundamental truth: Arun Jaitley had passed away months before the farm laws were even instituted. These laws, which incited widespread protests from farmers — especially in Punjab — and opposition parties, were officially introduced in 2020, while Arun Jaitley died on August 24, 2019.
Arun Jaitley, a prominent BJP figure, held the positions of Union Finance Minister and Minister of Corporate Affairs during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first term. His portfolio also included roles as Defence Minister and Information and Broadcasting Minister. Despite his significant political influence, Jaitley had withdrawn from active politics after the 2019 General Elections due to health issues.
Just a day before the swearing-in ceremony of the PM Modi government on May 30, 2019, Jaitley had expressed to the Prime Minister his inability to continue in the Cabinet due to ongoing treatment and health concerns. He passed away a few months later in August 2019 after battling several illnesses.
