Samba Farmer Innovates with Modern Horticulture Techniques, Inspiring Local Community

Samba, Dec 25 (NationPress) Baldev Raj, a farmer from Thalori village in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir, has emerged as a source of hope and motivation for fellow farmers and the local youth by transforming his farming practices with contemporary techniques.
Coming from an agricultural lineage, Raj has capitalized on various Central Government schemes to convert his farm into a model of innovation and profitability. By merging traditional farming with modern horticulture and fisheries practices, he has greatly enhanced his yearly income.
Raj grows high-value crops such as dragon fruit and strawberries, employing superior crop varieties and cutting-edge farming methodologies.
"The government scheme has brightened our lives and other farmers. With hard work and proper use of these techniques, farming can be turned into a profitable business," he shared with IANS.
The Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP) is a comprehensive initiative that includes 29 projects related to horticulture, crop, and livestock husbandry and has been crucial in transforming agriculture in Jammu and Kashmir. These projects are designed to improve productivity, sustainability, and competitiveness, tackling the issues of subsistence farming and climate change.
Discussing his journey, Raj explained the significant changes in his life.
"Previously, farmers had to visit offices for help, but now officials from departments like agriculture and horticulture actively engage with us," he pointed out.
Raj's farm currently employs eight workers for ten months each year, an increase from five workers three years prior. He encouraged young farmers to explore horticulture techniques and small-scale crops like dragon fruit and strawberries, which require little space but yield considerable profits.
"My annual income is between Rs 5 to 6 lakh. I urge everyone to venture into horticulture. The boost in tourism here has also contributed to our income," Raj stated.
Expressing appreciation for the government’s farmer-friendly policies, Raj highlighted the transformative effects of these initiatives.
"The HADP has been a game-changer. The support and opportunities provided have truly empowered farmers," he concluded.
Baldev Raj's narrative exemplifies the potential of modern agriculture. His innovative strategies and achievements have motivated many to reconsider traditional farming and seek sustainable, profitable paths in agriculture.
