Samba, Oct 18 (NationPress) The Samba district is quickly becoming a beacon of agricultural advancement in Jammu and Kashmir. Numerous farmers are stepping away from age-old practices to adopt contemporary farming methods.

Among these trailblazers is Rampal Sharma, a forward-thinking farmer hailing from Tarore village. His transition from traditional farming to amassing significant profits through floriculture has inspired many in the region.

For the last decade, Rampal Sharma has embraced an innovative and experimental mindset towards agriculture. By engaging in government training programs, utilizing various schemes, and integrating modern technology, he has transformed his farming into a lucrative venture.

In a conversation with IANS, he reflects on his beginnings with conventional crops like wheat, paddy, and maize. However, he soon recognized that diversifying crops and employing modern techniques could lead to greater returns, even on limited land. This insight prompted him to explore flower cultivation.

Today, Rampal grows a variety of ornamental flowers across 12 kanals of land, which see consistent market demand year-round.

“While flower farming demands extra care and diligence, if approached scientifically, the rewards can be substantial,” he shared with enthusiasm.

“In just one four-month crop cycle, my net profit reaches nearly Rs 5 lakhs,” he confidently stated.

Rampal has effectively leveraged numerous schemes from the Agriculture Department, Floriculture Department, Horticulture Department, and the National Horticulture Mission (NHM). These initiatives have provided him with drip irrigation systems, seed and plant subsidies, and essential technical training.

“Proper utilization of government schemes can help farmers minimize expenses and boost output,” he remarked. “I've fully harnessed these resources to enhance my farming practices.”

Rampal Sharma's achievements have made him a role model not only in Samba district but throughout the Jammu region.

He stresses, “If farmers embrace innovative thinking and regard agriculture as a business, they can achieve self-sufficiency. Our land and climate are ideally suited for cultivating nearly any crop.”

His aspirations include creating local job opportunities and motivating more farmers in Samba to transition to modern and profitable agricultural practices.
