Himanta Biswa Sarma Challenges Rahul Gandhi on Passport Transparency
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, April 15 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, currently in Odisha to seek blessings from Lord Jagannath before embarking on his campaign in West Bengal, has launched a fierce critique of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He has raised serious concerns regarding the transparency of Gandhi's international travels.
"Before he accuses others, Rahul Gandhi must be open about his own passport and foreign trips. I am willing to present my passport and those of my family to the media. I challenge Rahul Gandhi to do the same—then we will see where he has been traveling," Sarma stated.
He urged Gandhi to publicly address the numerous allegations directed at him over the last decade, asserting that, "Anyone who makes accusations must be ready to respond to questions."
In a separate issue, Sarma mentioned that the Supreme Court had revoked the bail of Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, commenting that the legal system is functioning as intended.
"The Assam government pursued this case to the Supreme Court, and the court has ruled. Justice will prevail," he remarked.
CM Sarma also rejected claims made by the Congress party and Khera regarding his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, allegedly holding multiple passports.
Khera had alleged that Sarma's wife possesses a UAE Golden Visa and passports from Egypt and Antigua & Barbuda, hinting at potential violations of Indian citizenship regulations. In response, Sarma characterized these allegations as part of a "smear campaign," claiming they are based on forged, AI-altered documents.
He has signalled his intent to pursue legal action regarding these claims.
During a media briefing, Sarma congratulated Samrat Choudhary on his inauguration as Bihar's first BJP Chief Minister, calling it a pivotal moment for the party and the NDA coalition.
"This is an NDA government, not merely a BJP government. While the BJP has the Chief Minister, this government belongs to the BJP, JD(U), and all our partners collectively. It should be recognized as an NDA government," Sarma explained.
Sarma also expressed strong support for the Women’s Reservation Bill currently under discussion in Parliament, urging all political factions, including the opposition, to fully endorse the legislation. "The reservation for our mothers and sisters has been a long-standing demand. This is a prime opportunity to guarantee women their rightful representation through law.
"The essential issue is that the women of India must secure this reservation—that is our fundamental agenda," he asserted.
He encouraged the Congress party to back the Bill, indicating that it would directly "benefit" them electorally in regions like Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, where Assembly elections are on the horizon.
