Seven Militants Arrested in Connection with Bihar Migrant Workers' Murders, Manipur CM Reports

Imphal, Dec 16 (NationPress) Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh revealed on Monday that seven members of a militant organization have been apprehended concerning the Saturday murders of two migrant workers from Bihar, and they are presently being questioned.

The armed attackers fatally shot the two workers close to the panchayat office in Keirak along the Kakching-Wabagai Road in Kakching district while they were cycling with a few companions. The deceased have been identified as Sunalal Kumar, aged 18, and Dasharat Kumar, aged 17.

After participating in the Vijay Diwas celebrations, the Chief Minister informed the media that the murders of the two migrant workers could be politically motivated.

“Seven members of a militant group have been apprehended, and senior police officials are currently interrogating them to determine their involvement in the killings. The police are actively working to uncover the culprits. Various security forces are conducting searches to locate the actual perpetrators,” he stated.

A police representative confirmed that the seven suspects are affiliated with the banned underground organization, Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) (KCP-PWG).

Biren Singh condemned the murders of the two migrant workers from Bihar on Sunday night and declared that an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh would be given to the families of each victim.

The Chief Minister, who also oversees the Home portfolio, expressed on X: “I vehemently condemn the brutal slaying of young brothers, Sunalal Kumar (18) and Dasharat Kumar (17), from Bihar in Kakching district, Manipur. This act of terrorism is a direct assault on our values, and my heartfelt condolences go out to their mourning families.”

At this critical time, “we cannot dismiss the possibility that this heinous act is part of a broader scheme aimed at destabilizing our state and plunging it deeper into chaos. We must unite against these destructive forces and ensure they do not succeed in instilling fear and insecurity,” he added.

An ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh will be provided to each bereaved family, and every effort is being made to identify, apprehend, and prosecute the individuals responsible, the Chief Minister stated.

“If necessary, the case will be referred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to guarantee a fair and comprehensive investigation.”

The deceased were residents of Rajwahi village in the Yadavpur police station area of Bihar’s Gopalganj district.

They were involved in construction work and were living in rented accommodations in Kakching.

In previous instances, migrant workers, particularly those from Bihar, have faced attacks in Manipur.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has also expressed sorrow over the killings and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for each deceased’s family.
