According to police reports, unidentified gunmen targeted the two individuals -- Takhelchangbam Hemanta (55) and Yengkhom Kesho (56) -- at the Kongba riverbank, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Heingang police station.
The assailants reportedly approached the victims and opened fire, specifically aiming for their legs before fleeing the scene.
Nearby locals who witnessed the incident rushed to assist the injured men.
They were quickly taken to the Imphal East District Police, who ensured they received immediate medical care.
Eventually, both victims were transported to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal for further treatment.
Authorities are currently probing the case but have not yet determined the identity of the attackers or their motives.
The Heingang Police Station has initiated a search operation in the vicinity to collect more information and locate those responsible for this brutal incident.
This violent occurrence on Tuesday night follows the tragic killing of two migrant workers from Bihar on Saturday.
So far, Manipur police have arrested eight members of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) (KCP-PWG) in connection with the recent murders of the migrant workers -- Sunalal Kumar, 18, and Dasharat Kumar, 17.
A significant cache of arms, including eight weapons, was recovered from the suspects.
The armed militants fatally shot the two migrant workers near the panchayat office in Keirak, while they were cycling along the Kakching-Wabagai Road in Kakching district on Saturday evening.
In response to the killings, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh condemned the act and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh to the families of each victim.
He also stated that if necessary, the case could be referred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to guarantee a comprehensive and impartial investigation.
