Mumbai, April 3 (NationPress) Rahool Kanal, the social media chief of Shiv Sena, has formally requested that Big Tree Entertainment Pvt Ltd, which operates the online ticketing service BookMyShow, avoid promoting Kunal Kamra’s stand-up comedy performances.
In a letter dated April 2, Kanal expressed concern that allowing ticket sales for Kamra's events might be viewed as an endorsement of his divisive rhetoric, potentially leading to significant repercussions for public sentiment and order within the city.
Kanal pointed out that BookMyShow has previously supported ticket sales for shows featuring Kamra, an individual known for his history of criminal behavior. “Kamra has consistently engaged in a campaign of vilification and defamation against the Prime Minister of India, Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers, and various public figures. These actions seem to be part of a larger criminal conspiracy, driven by motives that go beyond mere humor or satire,” he stated.
He elaborated, “Kamra’s premeditated, scripted, and provocative comments have repeatedly crossed ethical and legal lines. Such statements not only offend the public but also risk inciting public disturbances and disrupting social harmony. By providing a stage for his performances, BookMyShow unintentionally grants credibility to someone whose actions jeopardize public order, especially in a dynamic and diverse city like Mumbai, where your company operates.”
In light of these concerns, Kanal has urged Big Tree Entertainment and BookMyShow to cease promoting Kunal Kamra’s shows on their platform henceforth. “I am confident that, as a responsible organization dedicated to the welfare of your audience and the community, BookMyShow will take this matter seriously and act in the greater interest of sustaining peace and harmony,” he concluded.
Kanal’s appeal arises amidst ongoing controversy over Kamra’s remarks labeling Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief leader Eknath Shinde as a “traitor.”
The Mumbai Police have initiated three cases against Kamra, while the Madras High Court has provided him temporary protection from arrest. The police are currently gathering statements from the cameraperson and other crew members present during the filming of the show. They have also assured Kamra’s safety during questioning. However, he has not yet complied with three summons served by the Mumbai Police to record his statement.
