Chandigarh, March 1 (NationPress) Two armed assailants opened fire at an accused in the Ambala court complex in Haryana on Saturday, allegedly due to a longstanding feud. No injuries were reported.

According to initial investigations, the attackers targeted Aman Sonkar, who was present for a hearing related to a criminal case.

Witnesses informed police that three young men arrived at the court in an SUV. Upon reaching the complex, they discharged their weapons and quickly fled the scene.

The gunfire caused chaos within the court complex.

Teams from both the intelligence wing and the crime branch arrived to examine the crime scene, where two empty bullet casings were recovered.

Reports indicate that the assailants aimed specifically at Sonkar, a resident of Ambala Cantonment, who was escorted to the court by police.

“It appears to be a matter of old rivalry. We are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify the assailants,” stated a senior officer.

A security guard at the complex noted that two men approached, one of whom was armed with a firearm.

Station House Officer (SHO) Sunil Vats confirmed that Sonkar, currently in police custody, was the intended target of the shooting.

“Sonkar was brought to the court to provide his statement in a case. As he approached the court entrance, the two men in the SUV opened fire at him. This incident appears to stem from an old rivalry. We are currently investigating,” he added.

The shooting has raised serious concerns regarding the safety of judicial staff, lawyers, and litigants.

Ripanjit Singh, secretary of the Ambala Bar Association, remarked to the media that such an incident had never occurred at this court complex before.

“The administration and police must ensure proper security measures to avert future incidents. If individuals aren't safe within the court, what does that mean for their safety outside? This incident has undeniably instilled fear among lawyers,” he noted.
