Itanagar, April 14 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, declared on Tuesday that the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), a substantial hydropower initiative with an anticipated generation capacity of 11,000 MW, is a project of significant national relevance, benefitting not just the state but the entire nation.
The SUMP, estimated at Rs 1.5 lakh crore, is poised to dramatically reshape the developmental framework of Siang district, named after the powerful Brahmaputra River, which is referred to as the Siang River in Arunachal Pradesh.
During his visit to Riga village in Siang district, the Chief Minister unveiled a comprehensive development initiative for the area.
He initiated several projects by laying foundation stones and inaugurating others, cumulatively amounting to a remarkable investment of Rs 196.44 crore. These projects are designed to enhance infrastructure, education, connectivity, and the delivery of public services throughout the district.
In addressing a public assembly later, Khandu reiterated the importance of the SUMP, underscoring its status as a project of national significance.
He expressed gratitude to the residents of Riga and surrounding villages for their support, noting that approximately 70 percent of stakeholders have already signed Memorandums of Understanding for the Preliminary Feasibility and Allied Reports.
He encouraged the remaining stakeholders to acknowledge the long-term advantages of the project and lend their backing to this developmental venture.
Khandu pointed out the project’s wider implications, stating it is crucial for national security, strategic readiness, the preservation of the Siang River ecosystem, flood management, and water regulation.
Additionally, he mentioned that it would help protect communities downstream while fostering sustained economic and infrastructural growth.
The Chief Minister further explained that the project will guarantee a steady river flow, tackle potential water shortages, reduce flood threats, and bolster India’s preparedness concerning upstream activities.
He clarified that the Preliminary Feasibility and Allied Reports stage does not equate to final construction approval.
Khandu assured that public consultations will occur in due course, and final decisions will be made with thorough engagement from local communities.
He added that the projected investment of around Rs 1.5 lakh crore would unlock substantial opportunities, encompassing infrastructure development, job creation, business growth, agricultural advancements, and compensation for affected landowners.
Besides SUMP-related advancements, the Chief Minister announced several significant projects for the district, including enhancements to Riga Township Road, the building of a new Circuit House in Riga, an Integrated Water Supply Project for Boleng headquarters, and the approval for a modern stadium in Siang district.
Khandu also commended the youth of Arunachal Pradesh for their accomplishments in sports and reaffirmed the government's dedication to enhancing sports infrastructure throughout the state.
He thanked local leaders, members of the organizing committee, and residents for their collaboration in successfully hosting the event, despite challenging weather conditions.
Additionally, he announced intentions to return to Riga after October and consider convening a future Cabinet meeting in the region.
Emphasizing the government's commitment to inclusive and sustainable development, the Chief Minister urged all stakeholders—particularly the youth and educated citizens—to actively contribute to the vision of a "Viksit Siang 2047" and "Viksit Arunachal 2047."
