Gangtok, Jan 22 (NationPress) The Sikkim Police have been awarded the esteemed President’s Police Colours, the highest national accolade for superior performance and ongoing commitment to effective policing, thus becoming the 15th state police force in India to achieve this distinction, as confirmed by officials on Thursday.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs announced this decision on January 16 following the President of India’s approval, according to Director General of Police Akshay Sachdeva during a press briefing.

Describing the award as a collective success, DGP Sachdeva stated that this honour is shared by all members of the force, from constables to senior officials, including those who have retired. “This recognition showcases the courage of constables, the diligence of officers, and the commitment of senior leadership to serving the public. Even retired personnel are part of this honour,” he remarked.

The President’s Police Colours are not distributed annually but are awarded to select police forces that exemplify outstanding conduct, professional integrity, and a long-term dedication to public service.

In the Northeast region, only Tripura and Assam have previously received these Colours since Independence, making Sikkim the third state in the area to earn this prestigious status.

DGP Sachdeva emphasized the rarity of this honour, noting that from 1961 to 1992, no state police force in India was bestowed with the President’s Colours.

“This enhances the significance of the honour,” he added.

The President’s Police Colours, also referred to as “Nishaan,” symbolize valor, discipline, and commitment, and they are displayed on the left sleeve of police uniforms.

The award comes with a ceremonial flag measuring 3 feet 9 inches, featuring two-inch golden fringes, designed according to the Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines.

The presentation of the Colours may be conducted by the President of India, the Prime Minister, or the Union Home Minister. A ceremonial parade will take place in Sikkim to commemorate the occasion, which will be attended by either the President or the Prime Minister, depending on their availability.

According to protocol, the parade may be led by a Superintendent of Police or a Commandant, with four companies commanded by Deputy Superintendents of Police. A brass band and a pipe band will participate in the ceremony, which will require about 20 days of preparation.

Approximately 6,500 police personnel are involved in this historic recognition, with Sikkim maintaining a police-public ratio of one officer for every 116 citizens.

DGP Sachdeva explained that Sikkim’s status as one of the most peaceful states in India was a crucial factor in this assessment. Maintaining law and order, preventing and detecting crime, and promptly registering FIRs—especially in cases of crimes against women and children—along with a focused anti-drug campaign were major considerations.

Established in 1897, the Sikkim Police celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2022. Referring to the award as a landmark in its extensive history, DGP Sachdeva stated that the President’s Police Colours reaffirm the force’s dedication to professional and community-centered policing.
