Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday, 18 July 2026, inaugurated an Indoor Sports Complex at the Government Arts and Science College, Tiruchuli, in Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu, marking the completion of a corporate social responsibility project funded by the SBI Foundation with a grant of ₹3.96 crore.

Context

The newly inaugurated complex is a multi-facility sporting venue that includes a multipurpose indoor hall, a gymnasium, a table tennis room, and dedicated spaces for indoor games such as chess and carrom. The facility was implemented on the ground by the Sri Sri Rural Development Program Trust (SSRDPT), a trust associated with the Art of Living movement that works on rural infrastructure and skill development. The inauguration by the Finance Minister lends national-level visibility to what is otherwise a district-level infrastructure addition.

Policy Backdrop

The project draws its financial backbone from the CSR mandate under the Companies Act, 2013, which requires qualifying companies — including public-sector banks — to direct a portion of their profits toward community welfare activities. The SBI Foundation, the CSR arm of the State Bank of India, has channelled funds into education, health, and rural development projects across the country under this framework. Sports infrastructure in smaller towns and rural colleges has increasingly become a focus area for such CSR-driven investments, complementing central and state government schemes aimed at youth development.
