Is Nirmala Sitharaman a Symbol of Women’s Empowerment with Her 9th Budget Presentation?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 29 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for being the first woman to present the Union Budget for the ninth consecutive time. Leaders from various political parties supported this recognition, emphasizing that this milestone showcases the increasing influence and involvement of women in India’s political landscape.
Speaking to IANS outside Parliament, AAP Rajya Sabha member Ashok Kumar Mittal remarked that women's ascendance to significant roles and their meaningful contributions to the nation signify true women's empowerment. He stated, "When women in India attain leadership positions and serve the nation, it underlines their strength. This achievement merits commendation. We must encourage more women to advance. The passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill, reserving one-third of seats for women, marks a significant advance in this direction."
On the other hand, some Congress leaders pointed out that while this achievement is commendable, the emphasis should remain on the substance of the Budget itself. Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda noted, "While it’s commendable that she’s unveiling the Budget for the ninth time, we hope it addresses the public's needs. The nation faces numerous challenges, including a depreciating rupee, rising unemployment, and inflation. It is essential that this Budget provides tangible relief to the general populace."
Congress MP Vivek Tankha also recognized Sitharaman’s significant role, recalling a previous discussion with her. "When I spoke on the Budget last time, I complimented her and expressed that Indian women look up to her as a role model. I urged her to prioritize women's needs, as they have high expectations from her leadership," he said.
Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rahman Barq echoed this sentiment, stating that mere symbolism is insufficient. "While we appreciate having a woman Finance Minister presenting the Budget, the critical question is what the Budget entails and how it will benefit the youth, women, farmers, the underprivileged, and laborers. That is what truly counts," he stressed.
From the BJP, MP Manan Kumar Mishra expressed pride in the nation. "It is a significant honor that India has such a competent and successful woman Finance Minister. The Budgets over the years have focused on public welfare and national growth. This year’s Budget will also aim to meet the expectations of common citizens," he stated.
BJP MP Arun Govil added that Sitharaman’s ability to maintain her position is itself a remarkable achievement. "Such continuity in politics showcases her skills, dedication, and commitment to the nation," he remarked.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi addressed the country ahead of the Budget Session and the unveiling of the Economic Survey 2026. He emphasized a focus on "reform and perform," hailed the Free Trade Agreement with the European Union as "the mother of all deals," and asserted that India is firmly on the "Reform Express."
