Telangana DGP Shivadhar Reddy retires after 32 years, CV Anand takes charge
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Telangana's outgoing Director General of Police (DGP) Battula Shivadhar Reddy superannuated from service on 30 April 2025, describing his tenure as head of the state's police force as "memorable" and expressing pride in leading a "progressive, efficient and tech-savvy" organisation. A grand farewell parade was held in his honour at the Telangana Police Academy in Hyderabad.
Shivadhar Reddy's Farewell Address
Speaking at the farewell parade, Shivadhar Reddy reflected on his 32-year career in the Indian Police Service (IPS), saying he was retiring with a wealth of memories and experiences. He highlighted the implementation of friendly policing as a key initiative to bridge the gap between law enforcement and citizens.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: "It has been seven months since I assumed charge as the Director General of Police (DGP). During this period, I have received immense support and cooperation from the people of Telangana and from every member of the police force — from Home Guards to IPS officers."
"I express my heartfelt gratitude to each one of you for your dedication, commitment, and service in maintaining peace and public safety. I sincerely hope that our Telangana State continues to flourish with peace, harmony, and strong law and order," he added.
New DGP CV Anand Takes Over
C. V. Anand has been appointed as the new Director General of Police of Telangana, succeeding Shivadhar Reddy. At the farewell event, Anand acknowledged that the outgoing DGP "served the people with distinction over the last 32 years" and noted his significant contributions in Naxalism-affected areas, including playing a key role in the surrender of several Maoists, including top leaders.
The Telangana state government on Thursday also issued orders appointing Shivadhar Reddy as the State Security Advisor, ensuring his continued association with the state's security apparatus post-retirement.
A Career Spanning Three Decades
An IPS officer of the 1994 batch, Shivadhar Reddy had an unusual background — he was a practising lawyer before clearing the Civil Services Examination. Born and educated in Hyderabad, he graduated with an LLB from Osmania University before joining the IPS and being allotted to the Andhra Pradesh cadre. Following the bifurcation of the state in 2014, his cadre was reassigned to Telangana.
Over his career, he served as Superintendent of Police in Nalgonda, Srikakulam, Nellore, and Guntur districts, and held key postings including Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in 2004 and DCP, South Zone, Hyderabad (2007–08). He was also deputed to the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) as part of an international peacekeeping mission — a rare distinction.
Intelligence Chief to DGP
Shivadhar Reddy became the first Chief of the Intelligence Department in Telangana after the state's formation in 2014, serving in the rank of Inspector General. In December 2023, the Congress government reinstated him as Chief of Intelligence at the Additional DGP rank. Following his promotion in August 2024, he continued as Chief of Intelligence with the rank of Director General of Police before being appointed as DGP (head of police force) on 26 September 2025.
He also served as Commissioner of Police, Visakhapatnam from 2012 to 2014, and held posts including Additional Director and Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). With his appointment as State Security Advisor, Shivadhar Reddy's institutional knowledge is expected to remain accessible to the Telangana government going forward.
