Hyderabad, March 8 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Telangana, A. Revanth Reddy, announced on Sunday that the state administration is considering introducing legislation aimed at regulating social media.
He emphasized that this topic will be deliberated in the upcoming Assembly session, where a framework will be established to counteract false propaganda disseminated via social platforms.
During remarks made at the celebrations for International Women’s Day here, he highlighted the necessity for a system that allows citizens to report false information that is shared or published on social media.
"Currently, there exists a mechanism to report news and opinions from traditional media, but a similar structure for social media is absent," stated the Chief Minister.
He assured that the Telangana government will thoroughly investigate this matter and develop a platform dedicated to handling complaints regarding misinformation circulating on social media.
The Chief Minister further noted that such legislation is crucial to differentiate between genuine journalists and those who exploit the profession for personal gain.
Additionally, he expressed the importance of preventing malicious individuals from manipulating the system while pretending to be journalists.
On this occasion, he honored several female journalists for their contributions.
Reflecting on the vital role played by the media during the freedom struggle, CM Revanth Reddy recalled that Mahatma Gandhi launched a publication called Young India, and former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru initiated the National Herald.
He also mentioned Suravaram Pratap Reddy as the founder of the Golconda magazine, highlighting that these figures demonstrated how newspapers could influence societal change.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy elaborated on various initiatives introduced by the state government for women empowerment, which include free transportation for women on regional transport buses and ownership of 1,000 buses and 1,000 MW solar power facilities.
Moreover, he announced a partnership with Amazon to facilitate the sale of products created by self-help groups.
To acknowledge and promote women’s skills, the state government has established 150 stalls on a three-and-a-half-acre site valued at ₹1,000 crore near Hi-Tech City.
