Is the Reunion of the Thackeray Cousins a Positive Sign for Maharashtra?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Nagpur, Dec 24 (NationPress) The Congress Legislature Party Leader in Maharashtra, Vijay Wadettiwar, expressed his support on Wednesday for the recent reunion between Uddhav Thackeray, the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief, and Raj Thackeray, the president of MNS. He characterized family reunions as a favorable occurrence but emphasized that the Congress will not politically partner with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
Wadettiwar remarked, “Whenever a family comes together, it is a matter of joy,” and highlighted that the Congress is ready to participate in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections alongside Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar’s parties, but not with the MNS.
He launched a pointed critique of the BJP-led MahaYuti government, alleging that Mumbai is being systematically “stripped” and handed over to interests from Gujarat. Wadettiwar claimed that there is an ongoing “encroachment” on Maharashtra and its capital.
“Actions are being taken to seize Mumbai and tether it to Gujarat’s interests. We must unite to protect our city,” he stated, accusing the government of permitting prime land in Mumbai to be “swallowed up” and asserting that Gujarat's influence over the city's governance is becoming increasingly apparent.
Emphasizing the necessity for unity, Wadettiwar insisted that the struggle is crucial to safeguard Marathi identity, pride (asmita), and culture.
He elaborated on the dynamics within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), noting that while the INDIA bloc collaborated during the Lok Sabha elections and the MVA presented a united front during the Assembly elections, local body elections are influenced by distinct political realities.
“Decisions regarding municipal councils and corporations are predominantly made at the grassroots level,” he stated, adding that independent contests by MVA members in civic elections should not be interpreted as a division within the MVA or the INDIA bloc.
Reaffirming the Congress’s ideological stance, Wadettiwar stated that the party is steadfastly committed to the Constitution and social justice, rejecting any involvement in communal or religious politics. He urged voters to support the Congress in the forthcoming elections to ensure inclusive and equitable development.
