Himachal LoP Thakur Critiques Police Clash as Threat to Federalism
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shimla, Feb 26 (NationPress) A delegation from the BJP in Himachal Pradesh, headed by the Leader of Opposition (LoP) Jairam Thakur, met with Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Thursday. They presented a memorandum detailing the recent arrest of three individuals by the Delhi Police in connection with the AI Impact Summit case, highlighting a subsequent altercation with the state police.
Thakur, a former Chief Minister, stated that the confrontation between the police forces of two states represents a significant setback to the essence of cooperative federalism. He emphasized that the AI Impact Summit, held in New Delhi under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, greatly enhanced India's international reputation, attracting participation from leaders across over 20 nations and major global tech firms.
However, he criticized certain Youth Congress members for attempting to undermine the country's image through inappropriate protests at this prestigious event, allegedly orchestrated by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi.
Thakur informed the media that a key motive behind the obstruction of the Delhi Police was to prevent the collection and analysis of CCTV digital video recorder (DVR) footage and related documents. He expressed concern that this footage could reveal the entire conspiracy, detailing who met with the accused, who provided accommodation, and who offered assistance. He asserted that revealing the truth could have fully exposed the government's actions.
He noted that an FIR had been filed in Delhi, and the Delhi Police was following due legal procedures. Furthermore, he alleged that certain Youth Congress leaders involved in the incident had received shelter at Himachal Sadan in New Delhi, with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu admitting that reservations were made through the Chief Minister's Office, indicating a system of organized political protection.
Thakur pointed out that upon receiving information that some accused were hiding in Himachal Pradesh, the Delhi Police proceeded to Rohru and arrested three suspects—Saurabh Singh, Arvaz, and Siddharth—from a hotel located in the Chanshal Valley area.
He raised questions about how individuals with no established ties to Himachal Pradesh managed to reach that location and whether state resources were misused to provide them with safe passage and refuge.
Additionally, Thakur alleged that when the Delhi Police team arrived in Dharampur, they were obstructed, and an FIR alleging kidnapping was filed against them at 8:11 p.m., despite the team possessing valid legal documents, seizure reports, and court orders.
He mentioned that even after a Magistrate granted transit remand, the Delhi Police faced further obstacles, including attempts to seize their vehicle. Reports suggest that this standoff lasted nearly 24 hours.
