Tharoor Commends Priyanka's Political Ascendancy; Voices Concerns Over Violence in Bangladesh

New Delhi, Nov 28 (NationPress) Senior Congress figure Shashi Tharoor on Thursday praised Priyanka Gandhi's political ascent shortly after she was sworn in as a Member of Parliament, expressing his contentment with her accomplishments. He also voiced his concerns regarding the circumstances affecting minorities, particularly Hindus in Bangladesh.

'She was indeed an outstanding candidate. I even campaigned for her in Wayanad, and I am delighted she secured victory with such a substantial majority. She won by a margin of 450,000 votes,' remarked Shashi Tharoor.

'It is now her rightful duty, as the representative of the people, to bring forth issues related to Wayanad and India in the Lok Sabha. I am very pleased with her success,' he added.

When questioned about the criticisms directed at political families, he stated, 'When an individual succeeds, discussing their family becomes irrelevant. Similar situations occurred when Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav were in Parliament, with Dimple Yadav also participating. Success often leads to such dynamics in the House.'

Tharoor also emphasized the urgent need for a revised immigration Bill during a parliamentary committee assembly.

'Yesterday, the committee convened to discuss the challenges faced by our diaspora — immigrants, laborers abroad, human trafficking, and domestic workers. Numerous MPs raised concerns about their constituents experiencing difficulties abroad, such as individuals stranded at the Russian border due to the Ukraine crisis, or those trapped in the Middle East,' he noted.

He further indicated that the meeting garnered significant interest, with 22 MPs present, which he described as 'unusual for a standard meeting.'

'We engaged in a thorough discussion that extended beyond time, leaving no opportunity to address other matters. The primary focus remained on immigration,' the Congress leader stated.

Regarding the situation in Bangladesh, Tharoor expressed his concern, stating, 'Yes, we have deliberated on it. We convene weekly, and there will be a briefing on Bangladesh in the upcoming weeks, on December 11.'

The turmoil in the neighboring nation continues, as Chinmoy Krishna Das, a notable Hindu leader and spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote, was apprehended on Monday. He was presented in a Chittagong court on Tuesday, where his bail plea was denied, resulting in his custody.

Labeling it a national concern, Shashi Tharoor remarked that all Indians are worried because 'it is our neighboring country, and we care about its well-being.'

'It’s not just the Foreign Ministry observing the situation; all concerned Indian citizens are also anxious about the reports from Bangladesh. We will monitor it closely, and I am personally keeping a vigilant eye on it,' Shashi Tharoor concluded.
