Thrissur, Oct 3 (NationPress) The Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours, affectionately referred to as Puthanpally (new Church), is commemorating its centenary this Sunday with remarkable splendor, attracting political dignitaries, clergy members, and thousands of devoted followers. Rising to a height of 160 feet and featuring a bell tower that reaches 260 feet, the Basilica holds the title of the tallest church in India and boasts one of Asia's highest bell towers. Yet, it is the church’s substantial charitable endeavors that have significantly impacted society in Kerala.
The festivities pay homage not only to the faith of Christians but also to the awe-inspiring architecture that instills pride in Indians for housing such a magnificent church.
Its expansive 25,000-square-foot Gothic structure is embellished with 11 altars, detailed murals, intricate icons, and statues that illustrate scenes from the Holy Bible.
The church’s interior presents a visual symphony, merging devotion with artistic magnificence that captivates visitors, evoking a sense of pride among Keralites.
In a conversation with IANS, Rector Father Thomas Kakkassery, the dynamic force behind the year-long centenary festivities, expressed that the involvement of the church's entire community has made this celebration possible.
“The true essence of Puthanpally is not merely in its stones and spires, but in the spirit of its parishioners. Since October 2024, the church's 590 families have collectively raised nearly Rs 2.50 crore to fund education, healthcare, and community welfare initiatives.
“This extraordinary act of charity reflects the spiritual mission of the church, serving the community with a devotion that rivals its architectural grandeur. We have successfully realized all our plans due to the unwavering support of our church members,” stated Father Kakkassery.
The story of the Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours commenced on October 10, 1925, when Mar Francis Vazhappilly initiated temporary worship in a nearby school building.
The cornerstone was laid on December 21, 1929, but construction faced interruptions due to global events, including two World Wars, ultimately leading to its consecration on November 24, 1940.
Over the decades, the church has grown in prominence and spiritual importance, earning the title of Basilica from Pope John Paul II in 1992.
Notable milestones include the historic visit of Pope John Paul II in 1986, the establishment of the Perpetual Adoration Centre in 1987, and the inauguration of the majestic bell tower in 2006.
As the centenary celebrations unfold, Puthanpally stands as a beacon of faith, resilience, and community spirit.
From its soaring Gothic spires to the many lives impacted by its charitable outreach, the church exemplifies that true greatness is measured not just in height, but in heart as well.
