Torrent Group's ₹43,000 crore Madhya Pradesh investment to create 15,000 jobs
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Torrent Group is set to invest over ₹43,000 crore in Madhya Pradesh across energy and related sectors, a commitment that is expected to generate more than 15,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, according to Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav. Yadav made the announcement on Wednesday after meeting Torrent Group and Torrent Power chairman Samir Mehta in Ahmedabad to review the group's ongoing and proposed projects in the state.
Flagship Power Project in Anuppur
The single largest commitment under the investment package is a 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project in Anuppur, estimated to cost around ₹22,000 crore and expected to generate approximately 7,000 direct and indirect jobs. A Power Purchase Agreement for the project was signed with Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Ltd on 27 January 2026.
Land acquisition for the Anuppur facility has been completed, and construction work has been awarded to L&T and Tata Projects. Following approval from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, pre-construction activities are currently underway at the site.
Other Energy Projects Across the State
Beyond Anuppur, the group is developing a 1,500 MW Patalkot Pumped Storage Project in Chhindwara, involving a proposed investment of ₹7,500 crore and around 4,000 jobs. A 250 MW wind energy project is also under development across Ratlam and Ujjain, with an outlay of ₹2,000 crore and an estimated 500 jobs. The group already operates a 36 MW wind power unit in Mandsaur.
An additional 800 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project — involving an estimated ₹11,000 crore — is also being developed, with approximately 3,500 employment opportunities projected. Taken together, these energy projects account for the bulk of the ₹43,000 crore commitment.
State's Broader Power Procurement Plans
Madhya Pradesh is simultaneously preparing to procure 2,800 MW of thermal power through a DBFOO — Design, Build, Finance, Own and Operate — tender process. The Central Electricity Authority has assessed an additional thermal power requirement of approximately 1,900 MW for the state by 2036-37, based on projected demand. Chief Minister Yadav invited Torrent Power to participate in this upcoming procurement process.
CM Yadav said the investments would help meet Madhya Pradesh's growing electricity requirements and strengthen its long-term power supply and baseload capacity. This comes amid a broader national push to secure reliable baseload power as renewable capacity scales up but intermittency concerns persist.
Pharmaceutical Presence and Group's National Footprint
Torrent Group's footprint in Madhya Pradesh extends beyond energy. The group operates a US Food and Drug Administration-approved pharmaceutical manufacturing unit at Pithampur in Dhar district, established with an investment of ₹300 crore and currently employing more than 400 people.
At the national level, Torrent Power has an installed generation capacity of around 5.1 GW and is targeting 10 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, with investments spanning solar, wind, hybrid, battery storage, and pumped storage projects.
Officials Present at the Meeting
The Ahmedabad meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion, Neeraj Mandloi, Secretary John Kinsley, and MPIDC Managing Director Chandramauli Shukla. The high-level delegation signals the state government's intent to fast-track clearances and maintain investor momentum ahead of future investment summits.
