Guwahati, March 12 (NationPress) Assam has experienced a remarkable increase in tourism lately, with more than 30 million domestic tourists visiting the state over the past four years, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday.
He noted that this rise in visitors showcases Assam's increasing allure as a leading travel destination in India.
Sarma emphasized that the state's rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and enhanced infrastructure have been pivotal in drawing tourists.
“Assam has emerged as a favored tourism hotspot, attracting visitors from all corners of the nation,” he remarked.
Besides domestic travelers, Sarma mentioned that over 60,000 international tourists have visited Assam since 2021.
The growing number of foreign travelers further highlights the state's expanding global presence in the tourism industry.
The Chief Minister attributed this growth to several government initiatives aimed at improving connectivity, preserving cultural sites, and promoting ecotourism.
With its lush landscapes, wildlife reserves such as Kaziranga National Park, and vibrant festivals, Assam is progressively being acknowledged as a premier travel destination in India.
Sarma previously stated that the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) has seen a significant increase in tourist numbers following Prime Minister Narendara Modi’s visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site last year.
PM Modi is the first prime minister to have spent a night at Kaziranga National Park, visiting in March before the Lok Sabha elections.
The Prime Minister undertook an elephant and jeep safari in the park, interacting with forest personnel and offering suggestions to enhance the tourist experience.
The CM remarked: “Recently, Assam has experienced a record surge in tourist numbers, particularly in Kaziranga after Prime Minister Modi’s overnight stay at this World Heritage Site.”
The Assam government has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to construct a luxury hotel in Kaziranga.
Sarma asserted that this initiative aims to boost tourist inflow to the UNESCO World Heritage site.
