Tragedy at RG Kar Medical College: Karuna Nundy Takes On Role as Counsel for Victim's Parents

Kolkata, Dec 12 (NationPress) Karuna Nundy and her legal team are set to advocate for the parents of the junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, who was tragically raped and murdered on the hospital grounds back in August.

Nundy will be representing the victim's parents at the Supreme Court, Calcutta High Court, and the trial court in Kolkata.

This announcement comes just a day after Vrinda Grover, the previous lawyer for the victim's parents, disclosed her choice to step down from the case.

In a statement released from Vrinda Grover's Chambers, certain “intervening factors and circumstances” were cited as the reasons for her withdrawal.

This marks the second time the victim's family has had a shift in legal representation.

Initially, the family was represented by senior advocate Bikas Ranjan Bhattacharya, a member of the CPI-M in the Rajya Sabha.

Nundy, alongside Sabyasachi Chattopadhyay, is already acting on behalf of the Joint Platform of Doctors, West Bengal, which comprises senior physicians supporting the junior doctors' protest in relation to the rape and murder case.

Earlier in September, in a related development, the legal representation for the junior doctors leading the protest also changed, with well-known lawyer and social activist Indira Jaising taking over from senior advocate Geeta Luthra.

The body of the junior doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of the hospital on the morning of August 9.

Initially, the investigation was under the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Police; however, a division bench of the Calcutta High Court later transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
