Chennai, Dec 16 (NationPress) In a tragic incident, four individuals lost their lives and at least three others suffered serious injuries in a significant multi-vehicle collision on the Thoppur Ghat Road located in Dharmapuri district on Tuesday, resulting in a traffic jam lasting nearly two hours.
As per police reports, the accident transpired when a lorry carrying cattle fodder from Maharashtra to Namakkal district lost control while navigating a part of the ghat road.
The lorry, operated by S. Muniappan (43), who resides in Nadukkarapatti, Namakkal district, was descending the Thoppur Ghat when the driver reportedly lost control of the steering, leading the heavy vehicle to collide with a two-wheeler, a parcel van, a car, and another van that were either moving slowly or stuck in traffic.
Muniappan suffered severe injuries in the crash and died immediately. Two individuals on the two-wheeler—P. Arunagiri, from Madhemangalam near Nallampalli, and his sister V. Kalaiarasi—were killed instantly upon impact.
Four passengers in one of the vans sustained serious injuries and were swiftly transported to the Dharmapuri Government Medical College Hospital by emergency services and police.
Tragically, one of the injured, P. Dinesh (30), from Pethanaickenpalayam near Attur in Salem district, succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital, raising the death toll to four.
Upon being alerted about the incident, Dharmapuri District Collector R. Sadheesh and senior Transport Department officials visited the site to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Officials also assessed traffic management and emergency response protocols at the ghat area, known for its history of accidents. The aftermath of the collision caused a complete stop in vehicular movement along the busy Salem–Dharmapuri National Highway.
Police and highway authorities worked diligently to remove the wrecked vehicles and clear the road debris.
Normal traffic resumed after approximately two hours.
The Thoppur police have filed a case and initiated a thorough investigation to uncover the precise reasons behind the accident, including potential mechanical failure or driver fatigue.
